When Do Ducks Migrate South? Flyway-by-Flyway Timing

Ducks do not migrate on a date. They migrate when the water freezes and the food goes under, which is why the same flyway peaks in early November at the top and mid-January at the bottom.

The short answer, by species

Fall migration runs September into January. Which weeks matter to you depends on which birds you are hunting, because they do not leave together.

Blue-winged teal

Early September through early October

The earliest ducks to leave, and the least tolerant of cold. Most winter in Mexico or South America rather than in the United States, so they clear the country before regular duck seasons open. This is the entire reason September teal seasons exist, and the reason DuckCast does not forecast them: they are gone before the season it scores has started.

Gadwall

September into November on the prairie, December and January in the south

A prairie pothole nester as much as a migrant, so the Dakotas have gadwall on the water before anything has moved. They leave ahead of the mallards on the first hard freezes and winter in enormous numbers on the Gulf coast, where the federal harvest survey counts more gadwall than mallards in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Pintails

October into November

Ahead of the mallards, riding the first substantial fronts. In the prairie states they can be the bulk of an October bag while the mallards are still sitting on open potholes, and they bail early once local water tightens.

American wigeon

October into November, later on the coast

A grazer that wants submerged vegetation, so it follows the reservoirs south and settles where the grass beds are. The Texas coast, where wigeongrass grows in the bays down to the Laguna Madre, holds the largest wintering concentrations of any state DuckCast covers.

Mallards

Late October through December, by latitude

The freeze migrants. A mallard leaves when the water it is using locks up and the food it is using gets covered, not on a calendar date, which is why mallard timing tracks the freeze line south rather than the equinox.

Green-winged teal

October into December, and last to leave

The other teal, and the opposite bird. Green-wings arrive after the blue-wings are gone, peak with the mallards or just before them, and then outstay them: they sit through freezes that clear the pintails and hold their numbers into January. Nationally they are the second most harvested duck after the mallard, and in Texas and Louisiana they are harvested four to five times as often as mallards.

Divers and late-season birds

November into January

Big-water birds that follow ice formation on reservoirs and rivers. They tend to be the last real push into wintering grounds, and in the southern flyway states they arrive after the local season is already open.

What actually starts a migration

Day length puts birds in the mood. Weather decides the night. The shortening photoperiod moves ducks into migratory condition and sets the outer bounds of the season, but inside that window the departures are weather events, and the forcing function is ice.

A duck leaves when the water it loafs on locks up and the food it feeds in goes under snow. This is why air temperature alone is a weak signal and accumulated freezing degree days upstream is a strong one: what matters is whether the shallow country north of you has actually frozen, not how cold it got at your house last night. A front with no freeze behind it rearranges local birds. A front that locks the water sends them past you.

The DuckCast score weights this the same way. Upstream freeze and the cold-front trend are the two heaviest factors at 16% and 16%, with wind at 14% and snow advance upstream at 10%. Timing where we actually model it

These windows come from the same per-region season curves the live DuckCast forecast runs on, not from a general rule of thumb. They are mallard curves, and they are modelled per region rather than per state because within one state the peak can differ by two months.

A staging ground rather than a wintering ground. Birds pile up while the potholes stay open, then leave more or less at once when they lock. The season itself closes December 6 in most of the state, which is roughly when the birds are gone anyway.

Missouri is both a staging state and a wintering state depending where you stand in it, which is why it has three duck zones with three different sets of dates.

Two hundred and fifty miles south of the Missouri line, the peak lands seven weeks later. A single statewide timing estimate would tell a Bootheel hunter his season was over six weeks before his best morning.

Arkansas, the Delta and the flooded timber

A wintering ground, not a staging one. The birds that arrive here are largely done moving, which is why Arkansas runs its season in three splits stretching to January 31 rather than opening early.

We do not publish week-by-week timing for states we do not model. A confident date for a state whose water, crops and upstream country we have not fitted curves to would be a guess dressed up as data, and the only reason the numbers above are worth reading is that they come from somewhere.

Using timing to plan, without fooling yourself

Season-long timing tells you which weeks to take off work. It cannot tell you which morning to hunt, and the gap between those two things is where most disappointment lives.

A useful way to hold both: use the peak windows above to pick your weeks, then inside that week watch three things together, because any one alone is weak evidence. Temperatures falling over the next 48 hours. A freeze or snow line advancing across the country upstream of you. North winds building behind the front. All three at once is a push. One of the three is a Tuesday.

Do ducks migrate, and where do they end up?

Most of them, and not all the way. The common picture of every duck leaving Canada in October and arriving on the Gulf Coast in November is wrong in both directions: blue-winged teal are gone before October and end up in South America, while a good share of mallards never leave the Dakotas if the Missouri River tailwaters stay open. Between those two extremes sit the pintails and wigeon that push into Mexico and the divers that follow big-water ice into January.

The useful mental model is a series of short hops rather than one long flight. A freeze locks the water a flock is using, the flock leaves on the north wind behind that front, and it stops at the next open water with food nearby. If that water holds, so do the birds. If the next front locks it too, they move again. Watch the freeze line advancing across the country upstream of you and you are watching the migration itself, a few days before it arrives.

The spring return works the same way in reverse. It follows the thaw north from roughly February through April, with mallards and pintails leading and blue-winged teal bringing up the rear in May. When do ducks migrate south?

What actually triggers duck migration?

Two things, in order. Photoperiod, the shortening day length, puts birds into migratory condition and sets the outer bounds of the season. Inside that window the actual departures are driven by weather: a hard freeze that locks up the water they are loafing on, snow that covers the food they are feeding in, and a north wind that makes leaving cheap. The freeze is the forcing function. A cold front with no freeze behind it shuffles local birds around; a front that locks the water pushes birds out of the region entirely, and they do not come back until spring.

How cold does it have to be for ducks to migrate?

There is no single temperature, because what matters is ice rather than air. Ducks leave when their water freezes and their food goes under, so the useful measure is accumulated freezing degree days upstream of you rather than tonight's low. A run of nights in the low twenties will lock small potholes and marshes and move those birds; big reservoirs and moving rivers take much longer and hold birds through cold that empties the shallow country. That is why hunters in the same state can be watching completely different signals in the same week.

Why do ducks arrive in Arkansas so much later than in North Dakota?

Because they are different kinds of ground. North Dakota is a staging area: birds hatched there or passing through use the potholes until those potholes freeze, which is usually early November, and then they go. Arkansas is a wintering ground, the destination rather than a stop, so its birds are the ones pushed off everything upstream. The DuckCast season curves put the North Dakota mallard peak around November 3 and the Arkansas peak around January 14, which is about ten weeks apart in the same flyway.

Can you predict when the next push of new birds will arrive?

Partly, and honestly the useful version is a few days out rather than a few weeks. What is genuinely predictable is the weather that moves birds: a front, its temperature drop, the wind behind it, and whether a freeze line is advancing across the country upstream of you. Watch those three together and you are looking at the real signal. What is not predictable is a date in November decided in August. Anything claiming that precision is guessing.

Does the duck migration happen all at once?

No, and thinking of it as one event is the most common planning mistake. A migration is a series of pushes, each tied to a weather system, separated by quiet stretches where the birds already in front of you are the birds you have. Species also move on their own schedules, so a marsh can hold teal in September, pintails in October and mallards in November without ever being empty or full in the way a single migration date implies.

Do all ducks fly south for the winter?

No. Most North American ducks migrate, but how far depends on the species and on where open water and food hold out. Blue-winged teal go the farthest, clearing the United States for Mexico, Central and South America before most regular seasons open. Mallards are the opposite: they stop at the first reliable open water and feed, so some winter as far north as the open tailwaters of the Missouri River system in the Dakotas, and a warm December can hold birds hundreds of miles north of where a cold one sends them. A duck flies south when it has to, not because the calendar says so.

When do mallards migrate south?

How far do ducks migrate?

Anywhere from a few hundred miles to several thousand, depending on the species. Blue-winged teal hatched on the Canadian prairies can winter in South America, one of the longest migrations of any North American duck. Mallards and other freeze migrants tend to move in shorter hops, a few hundred miles at a time, stopping wherever water stays open and food is on the ground, and only moving again when the next front locks it up. That is why a single cold front can change what is in front of you overnight while the season as a whole plays out over months.

Where do ducks go for the winter?

To wherever water stays open and food is left standing, which in the middle of the country means the Gulf Coast marshes of Louisiana and Texas, the flooded timber and rice of Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta, and the big reservoirs and river systems of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas that do not freeze. Pintails and teal push farther, into Mexico. Whether a given marsh holds birds all winter comes down to whether it stays open and whether there is anything to eat nearby, which is why the same wintering ground can be full one January and thin the next.

When do ducks migrate back north?

Spring migration runs roughly February through April, and it follows the thaw the same way the fall migration follows the freeze. Mallards and pintails are among the first to move, pushing north as soon as water opens, and the classic rule of thumb is that the front edge of the spring flight tracks the line where average temperatures reach the mid 30s. Blue-winged teal are the last to come back, arriving on the prairies in late April and May. DuckCast does not forecast the spring flight; its season curves and scores are built for the fall and winter hunting seasons.

Do ducks fly into the wind, and do they land into it?

They land and take off into the wind, and on a long flight they ride it. Landing into the wind gives a duck lift and control at low speed, which is why a spread is set for a downwind approach and why a wind shift in the middle of a morning changes where the birds finish. On migration the opposite holds: ducks leave on a tailwind, and the north wind behind a cold front is the cheapest ticket south there is. That is one reason wind direction and speed carry weight in the DuckCast score, and why the radar check subtracts the wind at flight altitude before calling anything a migration.

Which flyways do ducks use?

Four, as North American waterfowl are managed: the Pacific, Central, Mississippi and Atlantic flyways, each with its own council setting frameworks under the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The boundaries are administrative, and real birds cross them, but they track the major north to south corridors well enough that season frameworks are set by flyway. The states DuckCast models today sit in the Central and Mississippi flyways, which between them carry the bulk of the continent's mallards from prairie Canada to the Gulf.
