Where OK birds come from
Conditions across Kansas and southeast Colorado usually predict arrivals here 24 to 72 hours out.
DuckCast watches Kansas and the southern plains for the freeze and snow that start birds moving, then reads NEXRAD after dark to see whether they actually flew. The upstream picture is why a score can rise here before anything changes in your own sky.
The 9 regions we score in Oklahoma
Every region gets its own daily score. Reports are generalized to the region, so nobody burns your spot.
Panhandle
Optima, the Beaver River and playa basins across the three panhandle counties. Early birds, early freeze, and the shortest season in the state.
Northwest and Salt Plains
Great Salt Plains, Canton and the Cimarron breaks. A refuge complex that concentrates birds when the country around it is dry.
North Central
Kaw and Sooner and the Arkansas River coming down out of Kansas. First Oklahoma water a bird sees on that corridor.
Northeast
Grand Lake, Oologah and the Verdigris bottoms. Green timber on the river and big open water beside it.
Central
Keystone, Arcadia and the Deep Fork bottoms through the middle of the state. Hunted hard because the population is here.
East and Eufaula
Eufaula, Robert S. Kerr and the Arkansas River navigation pools. The largest surface water in the state and it holds birds through a freeze.
Southwest
Altus-Lugert, Tom Steed and Fort Cobb with the North Fork of the Red River between them. Dry country where the reservoirs are the whole story.
South Central and Texoma
Lake Texoma and the Washita arm on the Texas line. The last big water before birds drop into Texas, and it rarely locks.
Southeast and Red Slough
Red Slough, Hugo and the McCurtain bottomland. Restored moist-soil and flooded timber that hunts more like Arkansas than like Oklahoma.
Common questions about Oklahoma
- When does the duck migration peak in Oklahoma?
- DuckCast's season model puts the mallard peak in Oklahoma around early November to late November. The timing is not uniform across the state: the model peaks Panhandle around early November and Southeast and Red Slough around late November, which is why each region carries its own season curve rather than sharing one. That is a modelled typical curve, not a prediction for any single year: the actual push depends on cold fronts and freeze-up upstream, which is what the daily score tracks. Always confirm season dates with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.
- Where do Oklahoma's ducks come from?
- Conditions across Kansas and southeast Colorado usually predict arrivals here 24 to 72 hours out. DuckCast reads conditions across Kansas and the southern plains and watches for the freeze that pushes birds south, so a OK hunter sees the push building before it arrives.
- Which parts of Oklahoma does DuckCast cover?
- All 9 regions: Panhandle, Northwest and Salt Plains, North Central, Northeast, Central, East and Eufaula, Southwest, South Central and Texoma, Southeast and Red Slough. Each gets its own daily score. Locations are always region-level; DuckCast never collects or shows exact hunting spots.
- Does DuckCast use weather radar in Oklahoma?
- Yes. DuckCast decodes raw NEXRAD Level II volumes from the 6 National Weather Service radar sites covering Oklahoma, and reads how much bird mass lifted off after sunset and which way it tracked. Separately, 8 upstream weather stations across Kansas and the southern plains feed the freeze line; those are weather reports, not radar. Radar sees every bird in the air, not just ducks, so read it as evidence that a migration happened rather than a duck count.
- When is the best time to duck hunt in Oklahoma?
- For mallard, the modelled peak in Oklahoma falls around early November to late November, and the strongest hunting is usually the weeks on either side of it. The timing is not uniform across the state: the model peaks Panhandle around early November and Southeast and Red Slough around late November, which is why each region carries its own season curve rather than sharing one. Inside that window the best mornings follow a cold front with a hard freeze across Kansas and the southern plains and a north wind behind it, which is exactly what the daily OK score measures. Season dates are set by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, and the peak is a modelled typical year rather than a promise about this one.
- Where can I find a Oklahoma waterfowl report?
- Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation publishes the official Oklahoma regulations and, during the season, survey counts and reports, so start there for anything legal. DuckCast adds a daily migration score for each of the 9 OK regions, built from live weather, the freeze across Kansas and the southern plains, crop progress and hunter reports, and each morning it reads NEXRAD radar to say whether birds actually moved over the region after dark. Hunter reports filed in the app are generalized to the region, never to a spot.
