Is There a BirdCast for Duck Hunters? What DuckCast Adds
If you have been checking BirdCast because it was the closest thing available before something built specifically for hunters existed, here is exactly what it does well, where it stops, and what changes.

What BirdCast actually is
BirdCast is a real, serious scientific tool from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, built with university partners to detect and forecast bird migration using weather surveillance radar. It is not a hunting product and does not claim to be one: its own stated mission is to support bird conservation and expand the science of migration, for every migratory species, not ducks specifically.
That makes it genuinely useful for one thing a hunter cares about: confirming that a real migration happened last night, somewhere in the country. It does not tell a hunter whether that migration was ducks, whether it reached a specific region, or whether it is about to happen again this week.
Two specific gaps, not a general knock
Radar cannot tell a duck from a warbler
On most fall nights the bulk of what radar sees aloft is songbirds migrating, not waterfowl. A BirdCast map lighting up proves birds moved. It cannot say whether any of them were ducks, which is the first question a hunter actually has.
Radar observes. It does not watch what is coming.
Radar reports what already flew, after dark, last night. It has no model for the freeze advancing across southern Saskatchewan right now, no read on crop harvest holding birds in place, and no per-species season timing, all of which predict a push before it happens rather than after.
Where Ducks Unlimited’s map fits
Ducks Unlimited runs a real migration map too, built from a third kind of source: hunter and field-editor reports, real people saying what they saw and where. That is worth having and nothing replaces an actual pair of eyes on an actual marsh. It is also, structurally, backward-looking. It knows about places someone hunted and reported, after the fact, the same way radar knows about birds that already flew.

Then, every night, the same kind of radar data BirdCast reads checks the forecast against reality: did birds actually lift off after dark, and were they flying under their own power or just drifting on the wind. When the forecast and the radar agree, that is confirmation. When they disagree, the app says so rather than smoothing it over.
Common questions
Is there a version of BirdCast built for duck hunters?
Not from Cornell itself. BirdCast is real, serious radar science, built for birdwatchers, conservationists and researchers, and its own stated mission is bird conservation rather than hunting. DuckCast was built to answer the hunting-specific version of the same question BirdCast answers generally: not just whether birds moved, but whether the birds that moved were ducks, whether they are in season, and whether they are likely to be over a specific hunter's decoys in the next few days.
Can I use BirdCast to plan a duck hunt?
Partly, and it is worth knowing exactly where it stops. BirdCast's radar genuinely observes migration happening: it is the same instrument DuckCast's own nightly radar check runs on. What radar cannot do is tell species apart. On most fall nights the bulk of what radar sees aloft is songbirds, so a BirdCast map can confirm a real migration happened without saying whether any of it was ducks. It also has no model for what is about to happen upstream in Canada, no crop or freeze data, and no waterfowl season timing, because none of that is its job.
What is the actual difference between BirdCast and DuckCast?
BirdCast observes: it reads live weather radar and reports what moved, for every bird, everywhere in the contiguous US. DuckCast forecasts and then checks itself: an eight-factor score built from upstream freeze and snow conditions, wind, season timing, live crop data and hunter reports, predicting migration before it happens for the specific species a hunter is chasing, in the specific region a hunter hunts, and then confirmed or contradicted against the same kind of radar data BirdCast reads, every night.
Does Ducks Unlimited's migration map cover what BirdCast and DuckCast do not?
It covers a third thing, and it is worth naming DU on its own terms rather than lumping it in. DU's map is built from hunter and biologist reports: real people saying what they saw, where. That is genuinely valuable and nothing beats a real pair of eyes on a real marsh, but it is backward-looking by nature. It knows about places someone hunted and reported, after the fact. It does not forecast a push that has not happened yet, which is the specific gap a forecast is built to fill.
Why doesn't DuckCast just use BirdCast's data instead of building its own radar check?
Two reasons, and both are real constraints rather than a design preference. Cornell's terms do not permit BirdCast's data to be scraped or embedded in a commercial product, so it is not available to build on even if radar alone were enough. And radar alone is not enough for a hunting forecast anyway: it observes movement after dark, species-blind, with no ability to predict the freeze pushing birds south three days from now. DuckCast decodes the same public NEXRAD radar data BirdCast reads, runs its own nightly check against species-aware, region-specific forecasts, and shows both numbers rather than only the one that already happened.
